The rumor before Miss Universe 2015 final was all wrong as we witnessed 15 contestants were called to the Top 15, of which Miss France, Miss Australia, Miss USA, Miss Philippines and Miss Colombia made it to the Top 5. After a wrong announcement of the host Steve Harvey, Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez was instead declared 1st runner-up and surrendered her crown to Miss Philippines, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach.
There, we had it. The winner of Miss Universe 2015, Miss Philippines, looking stunning in her mermaid royal blue gown and natural makeup look. We didn’t see this coming. In fact, Miss Philippines was not in our Miss Universe Top 10 favorites list. But now, looking back at her journey from the beginning to the end, learning more about this amazing woman, and listening to her voice, we understood why Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach totally deserved to be Miss Universe 2015.
There are many things you might not know about Miss Philippines, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, but soon you will, after reading this post.
Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach was not born in the Philippines
She was born on September 24, 1989, in Stuttgart, to a Germany father and Filipino mother. She grew up in Golden Village in Cagayan de Oro, Philippines with her family. She has a sister who is three years younger than her.
Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach was called “Piazilla” due to her height.
In elementary school, Pia had very low self-esteem. Some classmates always made fun of her height and called her “Piazlilla”. She became quiet and always felt insecure. According to Pia, she was a wallflower at school, the last person in the queue because she is too tall. No one noticed her and she didn’t have many friends like other people.
Pia became a child star at the age of 11.
She joined Star Magic Talent, a modeling and acting agency for kids in the Philippines, under the name Pia Romero. She acted in multiple roles in TV & film.
Her parents breakup pushed her to be an honor student in school.
When Pia was in Grade 5, her parents separated and they moved back to Malabon. From that moment, she was motivated to do well, she wanted to prove something. Pia became an honor student in her school. She is now a graduate of Professional Culinary from Center for Asian Culinary Studies in San Juan, Metro Manila. She is also a contributing writer for the Philippine Daily Inquirer.
Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach has just joined pageants for only two years.
Pia’s first pageant was the 2013 Binibining Pilipinas and she won the first runner-up in that contest. In 2015, she won the title as Miss Philippines and now Miss Universe 2015. Clearly, she knew what needed to be done to achieve her dream.
Pia’s lesson: Be true to yourself and have courage
Pia used to feel so insecure about her look, her tanned skin, and her half Filipino blood. She tried to become someone that she was not to please other people. Over the years, Pia learned that only becoming true to herself will make her happy and be more confident in her own skin.
What made her successful in Miss Universe this year was not only her confidence, her self-awareness, but also her courage. If she didn’t join the pageant again, she wouldn’t have achieved her huge success today. According to Pia, “I was prepared for anything. That’s why I couldn’t say that it was only my perseverance that made me stood out from the rest, but because I have all the courage in the world. You see, I was ready to lose, but I wanted people to see that I tried hard and not let other people’s criticism bring me down because when I want something, I don’t stop until I get what I want”.
That’s the Miss Universe we had been searching for!
Congratulations once again! Miss Philippines, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach.
